Cut off in the literal age. Owen Barfield & Carl Jung on alienation and political disillusionment
There is a link between rising levels of mental-ill health and political disillusionment. Feeling cut off is not just an economic and psychological problem, but is a symptom of a wider alienation arising from modern consciousness.
Owen Barfield argued that contemporary political problems are fundamentally due to estrangement not only from others but from ourselves, due to a loss of soul and spirit to materialism and literalism.
As Carl Jung put it, the gods have become diseases - diseases of the collective as well as individual psyche. The pre-political must address this crisis of anthropology if politics is to be restored.

To Generalise is to be an Idiot. William Blake on politics, disillusionment and abstraction
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.14 часов назад
William Blake lived during the period in which the modern world was born. A prophet, he detected the tendencies that now powerfully shape our age. The love of abstraction was high on his list of troubles. Such generalisations profoundly shape politics today. Politicians sell themselves on whether they will boost the economy, drive up growth, fight inflation, and I think the rhetoric is itself a...
Dante and civilisational decline. Another dispatch on disillusionment in politics
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.День назад
Dante lived through a period of almost total social collapse. Civil war and city-state terror, practiced by the church as much as secular powers, drove him into exile for the last 20 years of his life. For a while, he lost everything. But then, through the trauma, he regained a ground and rediscovered the fullness of life. The Divine Comedy is the product of that transformation. The journeys th...
God, sexuality & the psyche. CS Lewis and Sigmund Freud tabletalk. Thoughts on Freud’s Last Session

The new movie Freud’s Last Session is well worth a watch, particularly if either man is of interest. The issues you might expect are aired between them, not least belief in God. But also the more shadowy sides to their lives - Lewis’s relationship with Janie Moore, Freud’s with his daughter Anna. I enjoyed it, though also wondered if they might have discussed other things and found common groun...
The fullness of life. A conversation with Rupert Sheldrake

At school, we learn that being alive is to possess certain functions, from respiration to reproduction. But what is life and why can the word “life” be used more widely than referring only to biological life? In the latest episode of the Sheldrake-Vernon Dialogues, Rupert Sheldrake and Mark Vernon consider the meaning of saying that stars have a lifecycle, and that rocks and atoms can be ascrib...

Ethics and the failure of politics, or why ethics is part of the problem. A dispatch from Athens

Disillusionment with politics is probably the most obvious feature of the current mood. I am reading "The Divine Comedy", for the first time, at age 64, the Mark Musa translation, and your companion book of Canto commentaries, and your companion podcast on Audible. I adore William Blake. Chartered streets, wealthy, government. The constant reminder of the great divide. Walls built with wealth forged from the tilling of the common folks. Mind forged manacles are made through brainwashing and steering. Hope is a lighthouse that's casts light upon the shadows. The sun/ son. Have you seen the old man Outside the seaman's mission Memory fading with The medal ribbons that he wears? In our winter city The rain cries a little pity For one more forgotten hero And a world that doesn't care So, how can you tell me you're lonely And say for you that the sun don't shine? Let me take you by the hand And lead you through the streets of London I'll show you something to make you change your mind, R.M The wastes of the Moral Laws , the results of being spoonfed garbage. The halting of our soul's evolution and mass arrested development in the collective. Little light shining Little light will guide them to me My face is all lit up My face is all lit up If they find me racing white horses They'll not take me for a buoy Let me be weak, let me sleep and dream of sheep Tyger Tyger 🤩

I don't think "bathing" needs to be mythologized as "baptism." There is very little support in the Bible suggesting the ritual that so resembles cleansing oneself in available bodies of water, simply cleansing the material body is a "chore" in material existence. Carl Jung had a number of "spiritual visions," but I wonder if he shared Freud's use of cocaine.

Edmund Husserl’s philosophy was based on insights that saw this problem of idealization and abstractionism in human reasoning. He saw this problem as the problem of worldview building. According to Gadamer, Husserl saw Weltanschauungphilosophie as a second danger equal to naive and unreflective naturalism. There is a similarity with Husserl’s existential imperative in phenomenology with Kierkegaard’s philosophy of indirection. Anyway, this is very interesting point about Blake and I looked forward to your book. I am reading another book of similar concern at the moment called “Lost in Ideology: Interpreting Modern Political Life”. Although there is an argument to be made that more than any of his mythic characters the words of Los are in fact Blake’s own thoughts.

For America today where we see a 3 body problem is where the founders seen solutions. They knew foresight on a computational future that future generations would need a way to find a way home , a fundamental feature in our reality was used 3 lines of measure that tuned all precision instruments so that even if deaf dumb and blind we can find our way home ( by for thru = saved reborn ) x,y,z= manmade time hierarchy knowledge of good evil equations Rulers have taken advantage of this 3 degrees of separation = physical mystification for milleana 1900s structuralism power that be is no exception. It may be inadvertent today but it didn't start that way. Use the orientation and direction if nature itself and this English encoded longitude and latitude built upon the alphabetical exodus. 90 yrs a call to arms the liberal power of individuals granted the state unification and simplicity pushing infinite sums of complexity upon the people, 20 yr old cannon fodder necessary evils to win war. Thst tuned in grand unified evolutionary theory top down form and shape dualism, devine city by walls or personal actors sell the soul of America and it's elusive prosperity handed over to the few. We liberated all common sense marginalized groups leaving only criminals or extremists. We transfer wealth from women's suffrage to affirmative action. We industrialized 3rd world new nations that drew new borders 80 + yrs ago. Now that we've successfully achieved these it's time to Return that liberty back to the individuals and to repay all that's been charged upon multiple genrations of native family cells. Also the computational infrastructure can not live under population species looks good on paper but even experts talk past one another Over the slightest variations. You can justify a nation of robots with voting rights or beacracy We can not live under dualism Germany idealistic cursed rationalism progressive interventionism vs prayer logistic conservative wataboutism and reform prohibition era top down city's. Who face more challenges needing rural unification. You can not ignore the soul of a nation or individuals anymore. Now this burden on the heritage who founded mechanics have carried for centuries is everyone's to witness. Everyone is eccentric fundamentalist Christian now lol

Those terms like freedom are a tool to covertly unify unalike bodies. It's similar to how large evangelical churches speak of "God" as a unified belief, yet they all have oppositional ideas of who God is. This is why our greatest weakness is actually discussing what these unifying terms mean, it exposes our contradictory ideas.

SPOILERS You articulated your analysis very well. I was definitely intuiting something similar but was having trouble solidifying the thoughts. When piranesi is talking to the other I think it becomes more and more apparent the nothingness or wholeness that piranesi represents against the single pointed knowing and seekingness of the other. At one point the other comments on how the world is dead, and piranezi comments that although the tide isn’t alive in the traditional sense, it is certainly alive in another. The other had already written the tide and world off as known and thus was blinded to it. He was blind to piranesi waving to him in the beginning of the book just like he was blind to the remarkable world around him. I think that it’s ironic the other sought an ancient power to become invisible or turn into an eagle yet he had already found out a way to shift into a different dimension. He said that it wasn’t enough and continued seeking something more. The prophet realized the error in that thinking and essentially accepted that this was all there was like piranesi did, but the prophet was a narcissist and so his acceptance manifested differently. I guess the main difference in how the house effected pirenesi vs the prophet is that the person piranesi was died. the prophet saw it clearly but did not die. I think that this book ultimately illustrates how we are surrounded by “god” as you say, but some of us are blind to it, some of us seem glimpse it but it does not “kill” us, and some of us it annihilates. Idk it’s very interesting book.
